As the nation’s premier event in the field of Muay Thai—characterized by its highest level of competition, largest scale, and greatest influence—it attracted a total of 225 athletes from 34 Muay Thai teams representing various provinces and cities across China. The competition featured eight weight classes for men and two for women. After five days of intense competition, ten new national champions were crowned this year.

General Administration of Sport of China – Wushu Sports Management Center
Zhou Jinbiao, Minister of the Training and Competition Department, delivered a speech at the draw ceremony.
At the draw ceremony held on October 22, Zhou Jinbiao, Director of the Third Division of Training and Competition at the Martial Arts Sports Management Center of the General Administration of Sport of China, stated that this year’s competition marks the eleventh anniversary of the National Muay Thai Championship. The event has witnessed the remarkable development of Muay Thai—from the early days when athletes struggled to find a path forward and lacked enthusiasm, to today’s steadily increasing number of participants and the growing proliferation of Muay Thai clubs across society. This progress is the result of our department actively reaching out to collaborate with businesses and forging strong partnerships to jointly promote the Muay Thai program. Practice has proven that these efforts have yielded significant results—whether in professional leagues or in the national team’s outstanding performances on the international stage.

Meanwhile, Zhou Jinbiao stated that the Muay Thai program has garnered significant attention from the General Administration, society, and the media, and is enjoying healthy and positive development. Although it operates in a club-based format, its quality and team management are in no way inferior to those of other sports programs—this is precisely what fuels the continued advancement of the Muay Thai program.
Tagou Martial Arts School won 1 gold, 5 silver, and 4 bronze medals.
Xu Zhongyuan won first place in the 67kg category.
Students representing the Ta Gou Martial Arts School’s Kungfu class, along with teams from the Ta Gou Youth Sports Club and other organizations, participated in this competition. During the five-day intense competition, they showed no fear of stronger opponents and fought tenaciously, ultimately earning 1 first-place finish, 5 second-place finishes, 4 third-place finishes, and 8 fifth-place finishes. They also helped the Ta Gou Martial Arts School secure third place in the team standings and the Sportsmanship Award.

October 26: Golden Armor War God Yang Ming
Won the championship of the National Muay Thai Championship.
Yang Ming is a professional athlete at the Jinjia Muay Thai Fighting Club. At the 2018 National Muay Thai Championships and China Muay Thai Professional League Qualifiers, he used Jinjia’s signature move—the flying knee—to knock out his opponent, advancing smoothly to the national top eight with an outstanding performance. He then secured victory by unanimous decision over three rounds, making it into the national top four and ultimately reaching the semifinals. This fully demonstrated Yang Ming’s expert Muay Thai skills and exceptional personal strength. On October 26, Jinjia’s “War God” Yang Ming was crowned champion of the National Muay Thai Championships.

Muay Thai—the "sport of eight limbs"
Muay Thai is a combat technique that originated in Thailand and has since spread worldwide. It’s often referred to as the “sport of eight limbs” or the “science of eight body parts.” In competitions governed by pure Muay Thai rules (Muay Thai Full Rules), fighters use their two fists, two legs, two elbows, and two knees for combat. In kickboxing competitions (Kick Boxing Rules), fighters also use their two fists, two legs, and two knees for combat.

In martial arts, there are three main types of training: literary practice, martial practice, and horizontal practice. Muay Thai falls under the category of horizontal practice and is characterized by its formidable striking power. Driven by the current fitness craze, some fitness instructors have suggested using Muay Thai’s high calorie burn as an alternative to the calorie expenditure associated with aerobic dance classes. This approach not only helps women shed weight but also enables them to acquire a valuable skill that can serve as self-defense training.

Of course, Muay Thai is a martial art—and indeed, it stands out as an exceptionally powerful stand-up fighting discipline among all stand-up combat sports. A fully skilled Muay Thai fighter can use all eight limbs—arms and legs—as weapons to knock down an opponent in the blink of an eye. The decisive factors for a Muay Thai fighter’s victory are the seamless integration of technique, physical strength, tactical acumen, and mental fortitude. At its highest level, Muay Thai embodies ingenuity, adaptability, and boundless versatility—without being confined to any particular boxing technique or set move. Thus, Muay Thai is a highly unique, profound, and comprehensive martial arts system.
