From November 7 to 8, the 2018 “Fo Rong Cup” National Judo Masters Tournament was held in Foshan City, Guangdong Province. During the two-day competition, 182 athletes from 26 institutions across the country competed in 14 different events, with champions crowned in seven weight classes for both men and women. The total prize money amounted to 434,000 yuan.

This event is organized by the Chinese Judo Association and hosted by the Foshan Judo Association and the Culture and Sports Bureau of Nanhai District. It marks the second time Foshan has hosted a national-level judo competition, following the inaugural National Judo Masters Tournament. According to the organizers, this competition will adhere to the latest Judo Competition Rules adopted by the International Judo Federation (IJF), featuring a single-elimination format with quarterfinal repechage rounds. The event boasts exceptionally high standards both in terms of competition specifications and the athletes’ competitive level. The participating athletes are the top 16 male and female judokas ranked by points across all national levels, and they represent a key contingent preparing for the Tokyo Olympic Games.

The first match was a women’s -48kg bout, featuring competitors from Liaoning and Guangdong. Dressed in neat and formal judo uniforms, the two athletes engaged in a fiercely competitive match. Throughout the bout, the two sides were evenly matched, with scores alternating and the contest remaining tightly balanced. As the match neared its end, the Liaoning athlete seized an opportune moment, took her opponent down, and secured the victory.

After the referee announced the result, both sides bowed and exchanged greetings before leaving the mat. “This is precisely what makes judo so captivating—a sport that places great emphasis on etiquette, courtesy, and respect for others,” explained Xian Dongmei, President of the Chinese Judo Association and head coach of the national judo team.
Xian Dongmei stated that hosting the National Judo Masters Tournament can accelerate the promotion and popularization of judo in the South China Sea region, ensuring that judo competitions not only become a celebration for professional athletes but also provide more opportunities for judo enthusiasts to showcase their skills.

Guo Runbo, President of the Foshan Judo Association, believes that this competition not only helps athletes improve their competitive skills in preparation for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but also strengthens the grassroots foundation of judo in Foshan by promoting activities such as bringing judo into schools. “We hope to keep this event going and turn it into a regular judo tournament with national influence,” he said.
