On November 11, the 24th World Karate Championships came to a close in Madrid, the capital of Spain. After fierce competition, Henan’s renowned athlete Yin Xiaoyan, competing in the women’s 61-kg category, advanced all the way to the final. Unfortunately, in the championship bout, she lost 5-8 to Jovana, an athlete from Serbia, and had to settle for the silver medal. This silver medal was also the only medal won by the Chinese team at this year’s World Championships.
The Karate World Championships, held every two years, is the highest-level and largest-scale event in this sport. This year, more than 1,000 athletes from over 100 countries and regions have registered to compete. The Chinese Karate Team has sent 13 athletes this time, six of whom are from the Henan Karate Team. During the five-day competition, the 13 Chinese athletes took part in matches across 10 weight classes; in the end, only Yin Xiaoyan made it to the final of the women’s 61-kg category.
At the previous Karate World Championships, Yin Xiaoyan had lost in the bronze-medal match and ended up finishing fifth. However, after two years of rigorous training, the 25-year-old Yin Xiaoyan has reached the peak of both her experience and her competitive prowess, making her a strong contender for the women’s 61-kg title at the World Championships. In the gold-medal showdown, Yin Xiaoyan faced Jovana from Serbia; in their two previous encounters, Yin Xiaoyan had emerged victorious each time. Yet this time, she failed to perform at her best and ultimately fell just short of winning the gold medal. In the latest Olympic points ranking, Yin Xiaoyan still firmly holds the top spot.
